26.10.2017

From October 11 to October 22, the Vice Principal of our gymnasia G. L. Kornienko was in the USA on the program ”Open World”, established by the US Congress and the only exchange within the Legislative branch of power of this country. The program is managed by the “Open World Center” of the Library of Congress of the USA. The delegates from our city were nominated by the Rotary Club Cherkasy-Center.

Within the program, Galina Leonidivna had a unique opportunity to Washington, DC and main Kansas cities to learn more about the role of civil education in the process of building the country.

The program started with the meeting with the Executive Director of Open World Leadership Center John O’Keefe in the Library of Congress, Washington, DC. On this very day, the delegates had a chance to hear the lectures about American federalization and the reasons why the US is able to remain a united country from New York University teacher Dr Sam Potolicchio, the president of Preparing Global Leaders Foundation and Georgetown University teacher Dr George Brown. The program participants were also present at the XVIII round table discussion on the topic “Can a national value-based program help battle the splits in the Ukrainian society?”, the debate was quite intensive, informative, and thought-provoking. After a hard working day, the delegates rested while being on the sightseeing tour and watching the landmarks of the Capital City – Washington, DC.

Starting from the 13th of October, the delegates worked in different cities of Kansas. It is there where the participants started getting the actual knowledge about the importance of civil education and implementation of the student project works which could encourage them to integrate with the local power organs and taught to be useful members of their communities. The program was created by Rotary Club Hutchinson, Kansas and was interesting, intensive, informative, instructive, and most useful in all terms. The professional level of it was pointed out by all the participants.

During the guided tours to schools and colleges, meetings with the important representatives of the US educational system, specifically Kansas State Department of Education Commissioner, our Vice Principal was deeply impressed by the practical side of American education, the actual proximity of knowledge to life expectations, interdisciplinary connections, youth socialization, and resource base of the institutions.

The trip inspired the Vice Principal and the Gymnasia administration to a lot of new projects as well as modernization of the well-established traditions of our school.
