On October 9, Roberto Netto, a volunteer from Brazil startedhis work at the FCG.He arrived in Cherkasy at 5 a.m. yesterday and immediately began to work. He will be present at lessons, work with Interact, visit orphanages and children’s homes. He will also visit other educational institutions in Cherkasy.
Unfortunately, his luggage was lost in Paris and is expected in Cherkasy from day to day.
Roberto has a good command of English, French, German and Portuguese.
A city sightseeing tour was arranged for him. His first impression from what he had seen was that life in Cherkasy differs significantly from Brazilian.
Roberto can be invited to the lessons with assistance of V.I. Bereslavs’ka.
On October 3 a children’s festival "Poetic Escapades" was held in Theater Square. The contest was initiated by the youth public organization "Book Maestro."
More than 25 city schools participated in the contest. Schoolchildren tried to impress the jurymen with expressive reading of humoresques, singing and even dancing. Among the guests of honor of the contest was present Ivan Malkovych, a famous writer, the director and owner of the publishing house "A-BA-BA-HA-LA-MA-HA".
Under the terms of the contest, it was necessary to recite and perform a humoresque. However, the creative pupils recited not only humoresques but also ballads, and some of them even presented their own works.
The first place in the contest was won by the First City Gymnasia with the turn "By the Bull’s Prescription", the second – by Cherkasy Municipal Multisectoral Center for the production of "The House that Jack Built", and the third – by School No. 33, which performed the turn "Is the Doctor to Be Blamed?"

SAVISKO MYROSLAVA, a 10A Form pupil has just received a card of a full member of the Youth Europarliament of Ukraine http://eyp-ua.org. Its regular Assembly is being held today in Kyiv at our partner school, gymnasia No. 51. Usually, meetings are held exceptionally in English. In order to become a full member of the Europarliament, it is necessary to pass a serious test.
It should be mentioned that our Gymnasia pupils were full members of the organization already. Thus, three years ago, Olga Shvets and Natalia Vovk were among the project participants.
Myroslava is also the CCD president.
We’d like to congratulate her on this new achievement!
Today, the Gymnasia team that participated in the annual conference of the schools participating in the ASP project is returning to Cherkasy. The conference was held at the Laspi Children's Center, near Sevastopol, the AR of Crimea.
Our team occupied the honorary third place and received the Diplomas of the conference winner and participant. Our team won success together with Kyiv school No. 82 and Konotop gymnasia.
On September 20, the Gymnasia will be visited by our oldest friend, a former teacher from the sister city of Santa Rosa, California - Phil Graf. Phil visited the Gymnasia more than once, worked with our pupils and teachers. He gave many years of his life working at Montgomery High School.
This time he will come from Russia, where he participates in celebrating the 200th anniversary of the fortress Fort Ross, located on the Pacific coast. A series of actions are being planned for this event, as about 10 teachers and pupils visited in their time the Russian settlement on the Pacific coast.
Phil was one of those who started the partnership between the FCG and Santa Rosa schools. He did much for the development of international relations between our countries.
Igor Sukhobrus and Maria Mokrushyna (Grade 10) are participating in the all-Ukrainian gathering of leaders of pupil’s self-government SCHOOLS OF MANAGEMENT SKILL, held from September 15 to September 20 in Sevastopol, the AR of Crimea at the Children’s health camp ALKADAR. Our Gymnasia pupils along with several pupils from school No. 28 will represent Cherkasy pupil’s self-government leadership.
The project participants have promised to tell about their work experience on the pages of UNIKAL’NY HYMNAZYST (Unique Gymnasia Pupil).
John Badgel, the executive director of the Hope Now International Charitable Christian Fund (UK), and Jenny Howell, a member of the Board of Directors, paid an official visit to the FCG on September 6. The guests interestingly told the audience about their path of life before joining the Fund, how they had met Vic Jackopson, the ex-president of the Fund, and about their desire to serve and help people. The pupils asked questions and kept up the informal conversation.

We have just received the results of the EIT for 2011-2012 academic year. The Municipal Department of Education and Humanitarian Policy determined Cherkasy schools’ rating. Our Gymnasia occupied the second place after the PhiMLy. The HLL got "bronze".
The FCG received the best results in English, History of Ukraine, French and German among the schools in the city and region.
Soon we will post the full rating of Cherkasy schools.
A textbook of Spanish for first-graders of Ukraine, a co-author of which is our teacher Bereslavs’ka V.I., has been recently published. The “GENESA” publishing house has been long publishing text-books by Valentyna Ivanivna, but it has turned to the manual for first-graders only this year.
Let’s remind of the fact that all Spanish textbooks for pupils of Ukraine have been written by Red’ko V.G. and Bereslavs’ka V.I.
Several exhibits of ABC books will be placed in the recreation room on the ground floor on September 1. At present, several scores of them, published in a number of countries of the world, have been collected. There are rather unusual books, including an ABC book for weak-eyed, editions de luxe and simple ones, books published long ago and quite recently.
Now, a place is being prepared for the ABC book mini-museum. We are sure that it will be a nice surprise for striplings and their parents, because there is nothing of the kind in Cherkasy.
We have already reported that the annual conference of schools participating in ASP will be held in September. The conference will take place in Laspi, near Sevastopol, for the third time.
The FCG administration created a group of the conference participants including: Andrushchenko Denys, Maxym Paliy and Solohor Anna. The group will begin its spadework beginning with this Wednesday already. The group leader and attendant is Ananyeva N.V., a vice-principal.
Let’s remember that there are 56 UNESCO associated schools in Ukraine. Our Gymnasia has been participating in the project since 1996.
In May, our Gymnasia was visited by four Americans under the auspices of Rotary professional exchanges. Besides, we were visited by Mark Whitfield, the coordinator of Rotary children exchange projects in the U.S., who met with local Interact and Rotaract members, some Gymnasia pupils and teachers.
Unfortunately, in 2009 Ukraine had no opportunity to participate in the project. Yesterday we received a letter, which said that there were no obstacles in restoring such student exchanges. We expect that in the academic year of 2013-2014 already we will receive an American schoolgirl, and our Gymnasia pupil will go for a year to the United States.
Rotary exchanges are a kind of analogue of the FLEX program, but with the difference that travel expenses are paid by the applicants themselves. A year stay ends with visiting almost all U.S. states at the Rotary expense. The last FCG participant of such exchanges was Victoria Bryk, who graduated from the Gymnasia this year.
Today the Gymnasia was visited by Yereskovska Natalіya Sergіivna, a former FCG school-leaver, that graduated from our educational establishment with a gold medal in 1997 and continued her education at an American university in Salt Lake City, completed her postgraduate course at Georgetown University. At present, Natalіya works as an assistant managing director at the US Agency of the International Monetary Fund.
Natasha met the FCG principal and Ananyeva N.V., a vice-principal, and remembered her school days. Pleasant for the teachers were her words that it was the Gymnasia that played the most important role in what she became and made.
In May we already wrote about the visit of Thomas Føld, a young Norwegian, to our Gymnasia. On July 19, Thomas visited us for the second time. This time he settled in Cherkasy for long – he just married Tetiana, a woman from Cherkasy.
Thomas told us about his visit to educational establishments of his native town and the talks he had had there. In Norway, he found several educationists that were interested in Ukrainian prospects.
Thomas had long talks with the FCG principal concerning possible contacts with schools in this Scandinavian country.
P.S. It is interesting to say that Euro-2012 is doing a good job. We have received several proposals for coming into contact with schools from Spain, Turkey and even Australia. As a rule, some of the teachers from those countries are football fans, and after visiting Ukraine, they began to look for partners in this country.
The old friend of our Gymnasia Marie-France Barbie from Belgium has informed us that she will spend several days in Cherkasy in early September. This time, her visit will be short-term, but she is planning to hold a seminar for Cherkasy teachers of French, to conduct a few lessons for the Gymnasia pupils and carry out part of the program in one of Smila medical institutions. Also, Marie-France expects to meet with the Gymnasia pupils on Day of Knowledge. Her speeches are always emotional and interesting.
We always welcome Marie, thanks to her several international programs have been carried out at the FCG.
In early July, the FCG English club (its head - Vakulenko O.O.) received a letter from Buckingham Palace. Susan Hussey, the Queen’s maid of honor, thanked the pupils for the congratulations they had sent on the occasion of the Queen’s diamond wedding.
The pupils had sent their congratulation in May already, but the response and gratitude came in July.
You can see the text of the letter in the section of RECOGNITION.
