A meeting with winners of All-Ukrainian pupil's Olympiads and the Research Paper Defense Competition of the Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in various school subjects will be held in the large session hall of the House of Councils from 11. 00 to 13. 00 on May 16, 2013.
It is expected that Tulub S. B., the head of the regional administration, and Chernyak V. P., the head of the regional council will participate in the meeting.
This day 11 FCG pupils will receive awards and gifts from the heads of the administration and the council.
From 27 to 30 April, a folk group "Kalynonka" of the First City Gymnasia (leader - Hafinova L.V.) first took part in the National Festival of Ukrainian Studies "Soniachni peliustky" (Solar petals), which was held in Kharkiv. 28 teams of secondary school pupils of Forms 7-11 from 14 regions of Ukraine participated in the festival. Total number of the festival participants was 248 people. Our team participated in the festival for the first time.
Cherevyshnya Mariya was awarded a diploma of II grade, Rublevskiy Bohdan and Kovalenko Paula (Form 9-B pupils) were awarded diplomas of III grade for winning at a Ukrainian Studies competition test.
Hafinov Vladyslav (Form 8-B pupil) was awarded a diploma of II grade for winning at expressive reading, Cherevyshnya Mariya and Rublevskyi Bohdan received diplomas of III grade.

On May 8 a new exposition devoted to the great holiday of Victory Day was opened on the ground floor of the Gymnasia. The exposition is called THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR IN THE HISTORY OF ONE PERSON. Such a person is our former teacher of Physical Education Kahan Lev Rafailovich who personally participated in the opening of the exposition. In the right part of the stand the main battles of the war are enumerated, and in the left one there is information about the military victories of the young Cherkasy soldier from. The same day, Lev Rafailovich, who had celebrated his 92 birthday several days before, traditionally met with the FCG pupils on the eve of Victory Day.

On May 17, Marie-France Barbier (Belgium), an old friend of our Gymnasia, will once again come to Cherkassy region. It is her regular visit to Ukraine on a mission of helping one of the hospitals in Smila and our Gymnasia. Marie-France will meet with the FCG pupils, hold a workshop for Cherkasy teachers of French and will participate in the Gymnasia celebrations on May 25 and June 1. Moreover, Marie-France has written a book of her own Recipes from Mary-France, which can be bought in Cherkasy. The book has been translated into Russian and is being published in Smila at present.
Mamaisur Anastasia, a Form 10A pupil, is one of the few pupils who has become the President of Ukraine’s grant holder at various subjects twice in a row. Thus, a year ago she was the strongest in Ukraine at Law, and this year - at the French language.
Recently, Anastasia has participated in the 15th All-Ukrainian Conference of Young Scientists "Actual problems of natural sciences and the humanities in the research of young scientists", held in Cherkasy. Her research paper in chemistry "Quantum-chemical interpretation of alanine electrooxidation in alkaline medium" has got into a collection of research papers.
Will the schoolgirl’s name be probably heard among the winners at chemistry next year?
On April 25-26, 2013 the National competition of school newsletters was held once again in Mykolayiv. It is traditionally held by the local college of press and TV. To participate in the contest it was necessary to send copies of school media released last year to the organizers, and the jury of authoritative experts evaluated the quality of submitted materials. Two years earlier our “UNIKAL’NY HIMNAZYST” (Unique Gymnasia Pupil) was a prizewinner in one of the nomination contests. This time, our newspaper won the first place in the nomination "The best coverage of international activities in the school press." The award was received by the editor of “UGP” Valentyna Kravets.

On April 24-25 the program FLEX-Ukraine celebrated its 20th anniversary. The celebrations were held in Kyiv in the new building of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine. More than 80 program finalists were invited to the ceremony, among them there were three FCG pupils: Andrushchenko Denys, Solohor Anna and Tanchyn Tetiana. The ceremony was attended by the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft, the world-famous boxer Volodymyr Klitschko, and other guests of honour.
7000 Ukrainians, including 76 FCG pupils (constituting about 2% of all) have participated in the program for these 20 years.
Recently we have received the results of the English language contest “Greenwich,” which has been held for several years by the Centre for Creative Initiatives KLYEVER and Donbass State Pedagogical University. 218 Gymnasia pupils took part at the contest. 35 out of them received a Golden certificate, 25 – a silver one and 7 – a bronze one.
Our congratulations to both the winners and all the other participants of the contest. The principal will present the winners with their Golden certificates as soon as the next week.
The site of the Regional Institute of Retraining Pedagogical Workers has posted a complete list of the winners of IV stage of All-Ukrainian Olympiads. Overall, the region’s total number of winners has grown to 50. 10 out of them are from the FCG, which is 20% of the total number. The PhyMLy has the same number of winners. Unfortunately, the site did not specify the subjects.
Recently we have received a pleasant piece of information from the American Councils in Ukraine that two FCG pupils Sukhobrus Igor and Kovalenko Amelia became finalists of the FLEX program and would spend the entire next year in the U.S. In general, 78 Gymnasia pupils have become FLEX finalists for all the years of the program’s existence.
This year, only three program participants from Cherkasy have become its finalists, in addition to our Gymnasia pupils, a pupil from Specialized school No. 3 will travel to the U.S.A.
On March 27-29, 2013 ХІІ regional conference "Model UN. Ukraine" was held in Kriviy Rih. Our team participated in the conference, which traditionally took place at Kriviy Rih Secondary School No. 68, for the third time. This time the team consisted of Sirenko Oleksadra, the president of the Gymnasia Euroclub, Alfiorov Vladyslav and Shylenko Anton, the club members. The team was led by Dudnyk S.V., the FCG social pedagogue.
Our team has returned victorious to Cherkasy with the Diploma, testifying to the fact that they had no equals in the nomination of “DIPLOMATIC PERSUASIVENESS.” The competition was tense, as the conference was attended by 27 teams.
Recently we have received a copy of the ABC-book Crimean Tatar children are taught with in the Crimea. It was sent to the Gymnasia by our fellow-countryman Danylo Andriyovych Kononenko, born in Kamyanka rayon (district). He is a member of the Writers' Union of Ukraine, an employee for the newspaper "The Crimean Svetlitsa." The ABC-book was given by our fellow-countryman through Volodymyr Trokhymovych Polishchuk, a famous scholar of Cherkasy National University whose name is well known in Cherkasy oblast (region).
The administration will be grateful to anyone who can donate school ABC-books published in other countries of the world.
On March 21 Interact delegation returned from Israel, where it took part in the first International Youth Conference Rotary: the leaders of peace. The conference was attended by 150 participants from 20 countries; all the participants were aged 15-29 years. The conference was held entirely in English, all kinds of activities at the conference were interactive: project work, group activities, focus groups, etc... The delegation from Cherkasy lived in the camp, Ben-Shemen, in the outskirts of Tel Aviv. The participants not only worked, but also actively studied the history of Israel and besides Tel Aviv visited Jerusalem, Akka, Haifa, etc. And the project Hackaton at the Google’s headquarters, which lasted all night long, stayed in memory as a form of extreme and a wonderful example of teamwork. We also got unforgettable impressions of a sharp transition from winter to summer (36), and flourishing of the local nature.

The project participants will soon have a meeting with the Gymnasia pupils and share their impressions of the conference.
On March 14-15, 2013 the final conference of the participants of the program "Connecting Classrooms", managed by the British Council in Ukraine, was held in Kyiv. 90 people, representing 29 secondary schools in Ukraine attended the conference. It was the first joint conference of teachers and students, which added some interest to the conference program. The conference was opened by Maria Zakharova, the Project Coordinator in Ukraine, who introduced the audience to the conference program. The opening speech was given by the Deputy Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Martin Day. By the way, the conference was held only in English for teachers and for students all the 2 days.
European Youth Parliament - Ukraine is planning to hold a EYP-Weekend — a mini session of EYP at the Gymnasia on March 30-31, 2013. It is expected that about 50 active young citizens of Cherkasy will participate in the work of the EYP-Weekend. To participate they need to prepare a motivational letter and send it to the organizers.
The project in Cherkassy is coordinated by Olga Shvets, a former graduate, now an active member of EYP, and Roksolana Pidlasa, the president of EYP - Ukraine.
Traditionally, the Municipal office of teaching methods organizes an exhibition KERNELS OF EXPERIENCE during the spring holidays at which Cherkasy teachers present the experience of their work. Usually it includes printed works, books, collections, models, etc.
This year, the MOTM has decided to organize several exhibitions. Each school subject exhibition will be held at a different Cherkasy school. Thus, we have a chance to receive an exhibition of teachers of foreign languages.
Hence, on March 26 - 27, the Gymnasia’s entire first floor will turn into an exhibition hall and all the teachers of foreign languages of the regional centre will visit the school.
Admission will be free to the exhibition, and several of our teachers will take part in its work.
From 25th till 27th February during the International Exhibition «Modern Education in Ukraine - 2013» representatives of the Centre of Webometrics and Web Marketing presented first in Ukraine Webometrics Ranking of Ukrainian educational institutions «SWR» (Sumy Web Rank) and its results.
«SWR» ranking includes ranking of Webometrics information about schools, out of school institutions and educational institutions of I-II levels of accreditation on such indicators as range, authoritativeness and popularity in web-space. Generally, these characteristics include more than 10 web-indicators.
According to the results of «SWR» Webometrics Ranking Cherkasy First City Gymnasia won the 1st place among schools. Kirovograd Regional educational complex got the 2nd place, and Shashkevych School of Art of I-III stages No. 2, representing the town of Zolochiv, was the third.
P.S. The Gymnasia took part in the competition for the third time and our site was among the winners each time.

The Visegrad Summer School is educational programme which provides an interdisciplinary learning space for young Czech, Hungarian, Polish and Slovak students, and for their peers from other Central and Eastern European countries. The project aims to deepen knowledge on regional and global challenges, eliminate mutual stereotypes and build ties and friendly relations. Previous editions of the School were attended by over 500 people from: Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, France, Kyrgyzstan, Kosovo, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Germany, Russia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Ukraine.
