Recently, two large parcels of books have come to the address of the gymnasia. They were sent by the New York Ukrainian Educational Council. Professor Yevhen Fedorenko paid a visit to the gymnasia several years ago and liked it, its teachers and pupils. Since that time, the gymnasia has received parcels of books in Ukrainian published in the United States several times a year. This time, we received interesting text-books in Ukrainian culture, original works by Ukrainian writers, published in the U.S. Among them was a rare edition of the book by Franko published in the U.S. in 1919.
An exhibition of the received books will be held in the school library on April 14-17.
The administration sent a letter of gratitude to the donors' address.
A long-awaited traditional holiday "Go ahead, girls" was held on April 9. 5 girls representing each of the four Grades 9 and 10 took part in it. Both participants and fans liked the holiday. The organizers had paid heed to the requests of school girls, so the hosts of the holiday were 2 boys, school-graduates Andriy Shendryk and Illia Saltanov. More than once did loud applause and words of support break out in the Gymnasia gym. The professionalism of performance of some of the contestants' even impressed the adults. The jury gave their verdict. The girls from Form 10A won. The girls from Forms 9A and 9B were second, and the girls from Form 10B took third place.
The Gymnasia principal and Hvorostantseva N.V., a teacher, will spend the whole holiday week in Chernihiv, where the second session of the project “THE SCHOOL GROUNDS ARE THE TERRITORY OF HUMAN RIGHTS" will be held. The participants have brought the results of the survey of gymnasia students, teachers and parents. They show that the democratic changes at gymnasia are needed and expected.
The project will last two years. Let’s recall that 12 educational establishments from Ukraine are involved in it.
On March 10, the Gymnasia principal and Michael Zatloff, a teacher, are invited to take part in the public dialogue "Volunteering Without Borders", conducted by the Center of Social Partnership from the city of Sumy. They will participate in the public dialogue, as active members of the project "Volunteering Without Borders.
We would remind you that only in the recent past the Gymnasia saw three volunteers from Austria, Germany and Italy. Now we have a volunteer from China.
On March 11, a group of junior pupils from Gymnasia will go once again on linguistic training to the French town of Rosheshuar that is not far from Paris. Within 3 weeks will the Gymnasia pupils study French, travel over France and get acquainted with the culture of the country. Miroshnikova M. Y., a teacher of French, has been appointed the group leader.
Another group will be gathered to go on training in October 2010.
We have received an official invitation to participate in XII All-Ukrainian Conference of the UNESCO Associated Schools. The subject of the Conference is: "Forminging a sense of value of another person — a child, a child refugee, based on the principles of tolerance", it is dedicated to the International Year of convergence of cultures. The conference will be held on March 30-31, 2010 in Kyiv.
The organizers of the conference are the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and Humanitarian Gymnasia "Harmony" with the support of the Danish Refugee Council in Ukraine.
Ananieva N.V., a vice-principal, is responsible for forming a team that will represent Gymnasia at the conference.
Santa Rosa, our twin-city in California, has sent an invitation to Cherkasy. A delegation of students from our city is invited to visit this friendly city in June 2010. Forming the group of students who will travel across the ocean is in process now.
Year 10 students who wish to visit Santa Rosa are welcome. Request the principal for any additional information.
Let's recall that our principal, visited this southern American city in May last year, and the agreement on the exchange of student delegations was signed.
From Monday on, the section PHOTO-SHOWCASE will see posting pictures taken at the Olympics in Vancouver and sent to us by our former graduate Belous Anna. She is among the functionaries of the official delegation of our country and she expressed her willingness to send us the original pictures from distant Canada.

The City Debate Tournament was held at Secondary school number 17 on February 17. More than 20 teams from different schools of the Oblast centre participated in it. Our Gymnasia was represented by 2 teams, an English Language team consisting of Year 11 students and a Ukrainian Language one consisting of Year 9 pupils. Both teams won SECOND places, so we congratulate them on this occasion.
The subject of the debates was "Do cultural traditions influence the development of the state?." The teams were coached by Sylenko V.A.
TheUkrainian Educational Council - UCCA in New York once again has sent two parcels of books for the Gymnasia students and teachers. The Educational Council of New York has been working with the Gymnasia for several years already. They usually send us books published in Ukrainian in the U.S.A. Such literature is not published in Ukraine and is valuable for getting acquainted with the realities of the life of immigrants from Ukraine in the Old World.
The books have been donated to the Gymnasia library and can be freely borrowed for reading at home.
First III round olympiads of all-Ukrainian subject competitions will be held on January 23. 44 out of 60 Gymnasia students-winners of the city olympiads will participate in the regional competitions. FIMLI is the only school with a greater number of participants representing the city. Let's wish our students a success!
Another volunteer from Europe will start to work at Gymnasia on January 15. It is Alesio Vinie from Italy. He is 26 years old, he has just graduated from the University of Bologna and is a Master of International Relations.At Gymnasia he will work with the Euroclub, the Interact and the Club of Connoisseurs of the Italian Language.
On January 14, talks with the Italian were carried on, the Gymnasia principal, N. V. Ananieva, V. A. Sylenko .and Michael Zatloff taking part in them.
Vyacheslav Lininh will meet President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko on December 16. Vyacheslav has become a member of a small group of senior graders of Ukraine who will meet the president of this country. The gymnasia student promised to tell us in details about his visit a bit later.
Only 2 senior graders, Vyacheslav and a school girl from Uman, will represent Cherkasy Oblast at this meeting.
The International Youth League of Nations, established at the International Children Centre "Artek" in the summer and headed by Vyacheslav Lininh, our gymnasia Year III pupil, was officially presented at the Diplomatic Academy of the MFA of Ukraine on December 9. The project was presented in the presence of a large number of diplomats accredited to Ukraine, Ukrainian diplomats, Valentina Dovzhenko, the head of the all-Ukrainian Charitable Foundation "Nadiyi i Dobra" ("Hope and Well").
Vyacheslav handed an appeal to the UN General Assembly to the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Volodymyr Khandogiy which he would announce in New York in the near future.
The gymnasia administration informs students from other schools of Cherkasy that now it is possible to try to enroll in studying here in the middle of the academic year. The admission commission will wait for you to assess the level of your English in the gymnasia reception-room at 14. 00 each first Wednesday of the month. All interested first-form - eleventh-form students from other schools of the city may participate in the enrolment contest. The administration wishes to bring to its visitor's knowledge the schedule of the working hours of the commission: Year 2010 - January 13, February 3, March 3, April 7, May 5, June 3, July 7, August 4.
The ABC-book Museum will have appeared in the gymnasia by its anniversary. It will be located in the primary school building in special exhibition cases. There are more than 50 ABC-books from different countries of the world today already. Once a city school made an attempt to establish such a museum but it failed.
The administration will be glad to receive as a gift or to buy ABC-books of different times and from different countries. The names of grantors will be obligatory stated in the exposition.
The members of the Gymnasia INTERACT Club elected their president on December 3. KALCHUK ALYONA was elected by secret ballot President of the Club for 2009-2010 academic year. Vyacheslav LININH was elected Vice-President.
The very next week all the INTERACT members will visit the "Tepliy Dim" ("Warm House") orphanage and Special Pre-school Establishment №7.
Here is the latest news. We have recently received a letter from California, in which INTERACT club members from The Technology High School offer cooperation to us.
Olga Shvets' and Natalia Vovk, Year IV FCG students, are invited to take part in the regular session of the European Youth Parliament. They have been its members since this summer. The gymnasia students are the only school students from Ukraine that are the Youth Parliament representatives. They gained this right among numerous competitors.
100 young parliament members from Ukraine and 50 ones from various countries of Europe will take part in the work of the Parliament. The session will be held in Kyiv, December 3-6. The girls will work in various commissions. They promised to tell the visitors of the site and readers of "Gymnasyst" about their participation in the work of the Youth Parliament.
Holding an annual sitting of the English Club organized by students-trainees of Cherkasy National Bohdan Khmelnytsky University has become one of the gymnasia traditions. This year was not an exception. III year gymnasia students gathered at the sitting of the club on October 22. The students displayed their knowledge of the culture and traditions of Great Britain in various competitions and contests. They had to compete for the title of the winner of this year's tournament in such categories as "History", "Politics", "Celebrities", "London's Places of Interest" and others
