Cherkasy region has got 44 winners at the final stage of the All-Ukrainian Olympiads in the current academic year.
11 winners are from our Gymnasia, 4 are from PHIMLI and School No. 17, and 3 are from Gymnasia No. 31. Schools No. 27, 18, the “Berehynya” College and the HLL have got one winner each.
The last year performance of subject Olympiads’ competitors was somewhat more effective.
The Gymnasia Board regular sitting took place on April 6. Sylenko V.A., the Board Chairman, did not preside at the sitting. He was in Chernivtsi as a jury member of the All-Ukrainian contest "Teacher of the Year". The principal presided at the sitting, on behalf of the chairman.
The question of introducing a common school uniform for the 2011-2012 academic year was considered. The decision, that all Gymnasia students will have a knitted waistcoat of light gray color with an embroidered Gymnasia logo as an essential element of the school uniform beginning with September 1, was reached after a stormy debate. The Board Members discussed placing the orders for manufacturing the waistcoats, their cost, approved other items of the uniform.
The next stage, at which the question of the uniform will be discussed, will be all-Gymnasia parents’ meetings held next week already.
The Board members also discussed the production of diaries for the next academic year, provisionally discussed routine repair arrangements, etc.
An important event in the history of the Gymnasia took place on March 12, 2011. The First City Gymnasia was officially recognized a regional testing centre for setting the Cambridge International ESOL examination (the First Certificate in English). 19 Gymnasia graduates took the test in four types of speech skills in the presence of the British Council examination board (from Kyiv). We are expecting results in April.
Today, in the afternoon, a representative action delegation from Chinahas visited the Gymnasia: Ma Zhaoxu, the CEO of the Chinese National Corporation for foreign economic cooperation, Zhang Yulin, the Head of the Corporation’s Office in Belarus, Zhang Jiayu, a Deputy Director of the International Engineering Department. They were accompanied by Yevhen Vlizlo, the RSA Deputy Chairman, Maya Kulyk, the Head of the Department of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the RSA, and Ihor Lytvyn, the former Ambassador of Ukraine to China.
The guests saw round the Gymnasia, talked to its pupils, looked at the computer lab presented by other Chinese, discussed possible perspectives of cooperation with the administration. Finally, the Chinese gave a present of money to improve the physical infrastructure of the institution.
Everyone knows that 12 foreign languages are studied in the Gymnasia. If there were specialists, the administration would manage to increase the number of studied foreign languages. We call on foreign native speakers,living in Cherkasy, to cooperate with us.
By popular request, we’d like to inform that Chinese, Japanese, Turkish, Hebrew, Polish, Czech, Italian classes take place on Saturday. Other foreign languages are studied at the basic lessons.

Your child can now study at the British Council in summer! We are launching new summer intensive English language courses for Young Learners aged from 5–16 years old in May and June. Not only adults, but children and teenagers will have the opportunity to continue learning English during their summer holidays.
The site of the Regional Institute of Retraining of Pedagogical Workers “ОІПОПП” http://oipopp.ed-sp.net/content/view/1779/66 placed the order “ON HOLDING TRAINING SESSIONS”, which identified participants of the top IV Nationwide Round of subject Olympiads in 2011. There are 24 pupils from our Gymnasia among the 90 participants from Cherkasy Oblast.
FIMLI is considerably represented by its 16 participants. Gymnasia No. 31 as well as secondary school No. 17 have 6 winners each.
Our Gymnasia is "richly" represented in Foreign Languages, Law and History.
The 14th International Exhibition of Educational Institutions "MODERN EDUCATION IN UKRAINE - 2011" http://osvita.carshe.com. was held in Kyiv onFebruary 16-18, 2011. The "Web site is the face of success" was among numerous nominations there. We had sent our resources to the contest, and the result, which we received on March 3, was that our gymnasia site was announced the best web site among schools of Ukraine. We received a diploma, as well as free hosting for one year.
The authors of the website will continue to improve the gymnasia site and will be grateful to visitors for advice and suggestions.
Christel De Vrez from the Belgian town of Arlon has startedto work in the gymnasia today. Before the beginning of her training, Christel met with the principal and Ananieva N.V., a vice-principal. Negotiations on expanding cooperation in 2011 were conducted on behalf of the principal of INDA sister-schoolin Arlon . So, Belgian students will study in the Gymnasia this year already, and our pupils will study in Belgium.
And we are waiting for the next volunteer teacher from France. There is some encouraging news from Poland, too.
FCE courses have been working for more than a month atour Gymnasia. A little more than a dozen graduates master English to a nicety, being helped with this by Vakulenko O.O., one of the most experienced Gymnasia teachers. The courses work by authority of the British Council in Ukraine. The British Council representative will arrive at the Gymnasiain March to personally examine our pupils. The FCE Certificatewill entitle them to get a “12” at the final English exam and to enter university in Europe.
This bout only our Gymnasia pupils have signed up to take the course, next year we are planning to be at the whole city’s service.
The Journal “Visnyk Testuvannya I Monitoryngu V Osviti” (“Testing and Education MonitoringMessenger" is the only specialized edition on urgent problems of external independent evaluation and education quality monitoring in Ukraine.
Issue No. 1, 2011 presentedthe rating of 100 best schools in Ukraine based on the students’ performance at the EIE in 2010.
THREE schools from Cherkasy Oblast are among the 100 best schools.
FCG occupies the 36th place (its 47 graduates’ medium quality indexis 57, 68% (173-200 points)) on the national rating list.
Above us is FIMLI with its 20th place. Uman city gymnasiaoccupied the 90th place.

Gregoire Leroy from France will be a part-time teacher in the Gymnasia in April 2011. Gregoire has arrived in Cherkassy andwill be training in one of the telecommunications organizations, but he volunteered to be a teacher in his spare time. On February 8, we reported that gymnasia pupils won the city contest "ZORYA VASYLYA SYMONENKA".
It has just become known that our gymnasia pupils DMYTRO KOVALENKO and KATERYNA LUBLINS’KA also became first at the regional level. They had no match, and the jury unanimouslydecided that they were winnners in the nomination "DRAMATIZATION". The contest was held on February 12.

Christel Dovrez, a young Belgian, will start to teach French in the Gymnasia beginning with February 21. Christel is a teacher by profession. She works in the Belgian school INDA, our sister-school, which is situated in Arlon.
Let’s remind of the fact that our Gymnasia has had sister-school relations with it for over 10 years. Each autumn 7-10 Gymnasia pupils has a long training in the distant town of Belgium.
The project will be coordinated by Mokrushyna T.G., a school teacher.
A Spanish language textbook for form 10 has just been published. Our Spanish teacher Bereslavs’ka Valentyna Ivanivna isa co-author of the textbook. This is her sixth textbook of the subject. The textbook contains illustrations from the life of our gymnasia.
Today, aswe announced earlier, the last final basketball game has been played. The game with the combined team of School No. 22 was still a technical one, the advantage of our team was very convincing. Tkalych R.V., School No. 22 principal, arrived to root for his school combined team.
After the end of the final game, the City cup and champion diplomas were presented to the FCG combined team by Prokopenko S.S., a Methodist of the CMO.
The third (regional) round of the All-Ukrainian Subject Olympiads in foreign languages was held at the Institute of Advanced Trainingof Pedagogical workers ' http://oipopp.ed-sp.net/content/view/1717/6631 on January, 31 - February 1, 2011. The Gymnasia was represented by 27 pupils. All of them became winners. It is a record for all the years of the institution’s existence.

There is a preliminary arrangement with the Civic Society Institute of the federal state of Baden-Wurttemberg to hold a Ukrainian-German seminar on "Education and European Integration" in Cherkasy. The seminar will be held in early June. Teachers-leaders of Euroclubs, foreign language teachers, administrators may take part in it. It is desirable to provisionally inform about the preliminary participation in the seminar reporting to serte@i.ua .
In November 2010, a group of teachers from Cherkasy visited the similar seminar in Bad Urach, and our principal, the coordinator of the project representing the Ukrainian party, conducted preliminary talks for a seminar in Cherkasy.
We invite schoolchildren to take part in a competition for the scholarship for ‘А-Levels’ programme to study in one of the centres of Bellerbys College (Cambridge, Oxford, London or Brighton).
The Scholarship is for 15–17 years old secondary school students, whose English Language level is equivalent to at least 5, 5 band score of IELTS.
The winner will get the 50% scholarship on tuition fee for A-Level programme in the UK. The 2nd and 3rd place winners will get the 25% discount.
