At the end of May − the beginning of June, 2009 Phil Graf, a former teacher of History from Montgomery High School, Santa Rosa, California, USA an official sister – school of our gymnasia, came on a visit to Cherkasy. It was his 6th visit, which took place in 11 years after his last visit to our gymnasia in 1998. A long – standing close friendship exists between the families of Phil Graf and Nataliya Vasylivna Rebenko, a teacher of English of our gymnasia. So, it’s no wonder that N.V.Rebenko hosted our American guest this time too. Phil Graf visited Kyiv with its magnificent places of interest, the famous park “Sophiyivka” in the town of Uman, historical places of Chyhyryn, the picturesque Ukrainian village of Balakliya. He also spent a few days at our gymnasia, but the most memorable for him appeared our Last Bell Ceremony during which everybody present felt that special unique spirit of the gymnasia as one extended family of teachers, pupils and their parents. There Phil Graf was awarded the Status of the Honorary Teacher of the gymnasia. During this solemn ceremony Phil Graf promised to continue working for the benefit of broadening sister – school relationship between the American and Ukrainian schools and promote the revival of school exchanges.
On May 26 Mr. Leigh Turner, Her Majesty Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom to Ukraine, visited the gymnasia. Mr. Vic Jackopson, President of the International Christian Charitable Fund “Hope Now” accompanied him.
The guests were warmly met by the members of the gymnasia administration, staff and senior pupils. A photo was taken of all those present (including the Chinese delegation of teachers and students who were visiting the gymnasia) with the honorable guests.
Later the Ambassador and all guests were invited to make a tour of the gymnasia. The highlights of the tour were the reading – room and the computer lab. The guests were most interested in the history of the gymnasia fruitful cooperation with the International Christian Charitable Fund “Hope Now” and sister – school in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, USA which resulted in the construction of those classrooms. The financial support of “Hope Now” and personally Vic Jackopson was substantial and the gratitude of the school administration was deep and sincere.
The Ambassador was interested in the implementation of the International School Partnership Program, answered numerous questions of those present and supported the school on its way to the polylingual gymnasia of international level.
There is a strong belief that the Ambassador will help the First City Gymnasia in establishing twin – school relationship with a school in the United Kingdom which would be beneficial for both educational establishments.
The first educational exchange between Wanzhou №2 Senior High School, Chongqing and the First City Gymnasia, Cherkasy, Ukraine has ended. Our guests had lessons of English and Ukrainian, made a tour of the gymnasia and planted a Tree of Friendship in the schoolyard. The Chinese and Ukrainian teachers and students participated in the joint project “Children Dream to Live in Peace” and Dialogue of Cultures Round Table. The Ukrainian students, their parents and teachers were greatly impressed by the performance prepared by the Chinese delegation and overwhelmed by their interests and talents.
The delegation was welcomed by the Mayor of the City Mr. Serhiy Odarych and the Head of the City Department of Education and Humanitarian Policy Mr. M. Kotko. The Chinese delegation visited Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine and enjoyed the sights of interest there. Our Chinese friends were invited to Cherkasy National University, the Medical College, and the Banking Institute. They made a trip to Sofiyivka, a 200-year-old dendrological park and Chyhyryn, the ancient capital of Ukraine.
They went on excursions to the confectionary and Cherkasytransgas. The highlight of the visit was a trip to the birthplace of the National Hero of China Georgiy Kulishenko.
This educational exchange will undoubtedly get into the history of the gymnasia. We hope so much that this visit of the Chinese delegation from Wanzhou №2 Senior High School won’t be the last and due to our joint efforts the friendly relations between our educational establishments will be only strengthened.
We feel very happy with the visit of our Chinese friends Mr. Feng Liping, the Principal and Mr.Xu Chuanjun, a teacher of English and the students. All of them have made a credit to their school and the city.
