All About the Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
The Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is a nationwide scientific and public project aimed at seeking, supporting, and promoting the creative development of gifted students, schoolchildren, and university students capable of scientific activity. It has no organizational or legal form. Its activities are carried out based on orders from educational management bodies, regulations from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and decisions from the Presidium of the Small Academy of Sciences, which are directed to regional divisions - territorial branches through the central institution. The territorial branches operate as separate legal entities or as structural subdivisions of other extracurricular and higher educational institutions, organizations within the system of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine. The overall coordination of activities and organizational-methodological leadership of the project is provided by the extracurricular educational institution of the Small Academy of Students' Youth in accordance with the Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine dated December 31, 2004, No. 990 "On Improving the Activities of the Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine."
The Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was created and developed under the guidance of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine with the participation of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and its research institutes, as well as higher educational institutions from all regions of Ukraine.
In 2004, the need arose to establish a unified coordination center. At the initiative of the Presidium of the Small Academy of Sciences and with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, a state extracurricular educational institution was created: the Small Academy of Sciences of Students' Youth, which currently coordinates the activities of territorial branches, organizes the work of the Higher School of the Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, nationwide mass events, and disburses presidential scholarships to the best students of the Small Academy, winners of nationwide scientific work competitions and Olympiads.
Today, the Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine unites 27 territorial branches at the regional level, which manage about 1,000 district territorial branches and scientific societies of students.
The main base for selecting talented children is the system of extracurricular educational institutions (about 1,400 institutions of various directions) in which more than 1,500,000 students (20% of schoolchildren) study after school hours. From these students, as well as those from general education schools with active student scientific societies, the best children are selected annually who show abilities for scientific, experimental, and research work.
Students who are members of the Small Academy of Sciences are divided into listeners, candidates, and full members.
Listeners: students in grades 8-11 of schools, students from vocational schools who show interest in scientific activities, wish to acquire additional knowledge in specific fields of science, and participate in the work of a section or club.
Candidates for membership in the Small Academy of Sciences: students of clubs and sections who show abilities in the in-depth study of scientific disciplines beyond the school curriculum; are inclined to conduct scientific research and technical creativity; participate in conferences and exhibitions; and are prize-winners of Olympiads. A candidate is approved by the presidium of the territorial branch of the Small Academy based on the recommendations of scientific societies, sections, and clubs.
Full members of the Small Academy of Sciences: candidates who have independent scientific work and study in scientific clubs and sections for at least two years.
After several years of training, the best students of the Small Academy participate in the annual national competition-defense of research works by students who are members of the Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which takes place in three stages (city, region, final in Kyiv). About 100,000 high school students participate in all stages of the national competition-defense, and only the top 1,000 advance to the final. Both the competition itself and all activities of the Small Academy are structured into six scientific departments, which include 40 sections covering almost all scientific fields. In addition to the national competition, students of the Small Academy participate in various regional, nationwide, and international intellectual competitions, tournaments, Olympiads, festivals, expeditions, seminars, and colloquiums, demonstrating excellent preparation in basic knowledge and high creative abilities.
In Cherkasy, there is also its own territorial branch of the Small Academy of Sciences http://cherkasy.man.gov.ua
The winners of the national stage have the same privileges as the winners of the fourth stage of Olympiads.
