We sincerely congratulate the administration, teachers and students of the First City Gymnasium and wish them a happy 135th anniversary! For many years, the gymnasium has been a source of knowledge and a center of scientific and educational thought. For our family, it has also become truly dear. On this significant day, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the teachers of the gymnasium for their hard work. Congratulations on the anniversary from A.M. Gusak.

Dear colleagues, Thank you very much for your attention and for inviting me to the celebrations on the occasion of the 135th anniversary of the first city gymnasium, where I had the pleasure of studying in 1960-1970.

Unfortunately, I will most likely not be able to attend the celebrations for reasons beyond my control. I congratulate my home school on its anniversary and am sending you materials that may be useful to you in creating an alumni database. I would like to emphasize that during the period of my study, the first school had just started teaching English from the first grade, but did not forget about other subjects.

In particular, the first school taught math quite well (in particular, my favorite math teacher Lidia Fedorovna - it was under her that we began to win regional math competitions), Russian literature (my favorite class - really cool! teacher was Vera Yakovlevna Dashevska-Chudnovska), Ukrainian literature (I think it was Mrs. Golik), English language and literature (in particular, the strict and fair Leonid Yosypovych, and the very young Galina Sigismundovna), physical education (the original and optimistic Lev Rafailovych). Oleksii Mykhailovych Vovkotrub (a teacher and head teacher) tried to explain the essence of physics to us at least a little bit during morning special classes (half an hour before the start of classes). I am eternally grateful to all named and unnamed teachers and bow my already graying head low to them. I hope that I have not disgraced the honorable title of a graduate of Cherkasy School No. 1.

It so happened that I graduated from the Faculty of Physics at Lomonosov Moscow State University (with honors) and for most of my life, in addition to teaching, I have been engaged in research in the field of materials physics. My relatively decent (at that time) knowledge of English (acquired at our school), after the collapse of the Iron Curtain, helped me establish working contacts with experts in my field of science. As a result, over the past 20 years, I have made more than 50 scientific visits to universities in the United States, France, Russia, Germany, Singapore, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Spain, and the Czech Republic, where I have conducted research and lectured on the physics of nanomaterials, published two monographs in English, chapters in four more monographs, and more than a hundred scientific articles in international professional journals.

A list of my main publications can be found online:

http://orcid.org/0000-0002-2594-5559
http://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.url?authorId=7005107923

I am sending my CV and the texts of some of my articles as an attachment. If necessary, students can use them in their technical translation classes. If necessary, I can provide the school with files with the texts of my monographs in English, published by Wiley (USA) and Wiley-VCH (Germany).

Sincerely, Andriy Gusak, born in 1954, graduated from Cherkasy High School No. 1 in 1970 (gold medal, one of six in that special year, among other medalists were the well-known Volodymyr Khandohiy, Zhanna Holubnycha, and Tanya Leshchenko), Doctor of Physics and Mathematics since 1992, Professor of Physics at Cherkasy National University since 1994, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine since 1996.

Greetings from the Consul of the Embassy of Ukraine in the UK, PMG alumnus Volodymyr Kovalenko

Dear Sergey Ivanovich, teachers of the First City Gymnasium and dear students.

I am pleased to realize that today we are celebrating another solemn date of our gymnasium, and each of us recalls pleasant times of studying, our teachers, about whom we remember only pleasant things. Studying at a school on a hill near the Dnipro River was the first impetus for many of us to achieve future success, and it was here that we realized that if you have a dream, you need to do everything possible to achieve it. By the nature of my work, I had the opportunity to work for more than 20 years outside of Ukraine in Africa, Asia and Europe, and I want to testify that I have met my countrymen and our graduates in many countries around the world.
I wish all of you all the best, and I wish our students to master various professions. Become real specialists, and knowledge of a foreign language will enable you to stay ahead of the curve, give you access to the heritage of mankind and make you in demand.

My regards to Sergiy Ivanovych and the teaching staff of the gymnasium.

Sincerely yours,
Volodymyr Kovalenko
