On April 05, 2019, on the initiative and according to the regulations developed by the First City Gymnasium of Cherkasy, the city's Paddington English Language Contest was held among 6-7th grade students. The contest was held with the support of the methodologist of the city methodical cabinet of educational institutions Lyakhovetska T.G., who created the contest website and interested the city's English teachers in watching the Paddington cartoon with their students.
Why Paddington? Paddington is the main character in the children's stories by British writer Michael Bond. Paddington is a bear cub from Peru who came to London and got lost at the Paddington tube stop. He lives with an English family and goes through many incredible adventures. Based on the book, a cartoon was made, which aroused and continues to arouse interest among viewers around the world.
In the first round of the competition (correspondence, online), 72 students took part. They answered quiz questions on the topic “What do you know about Paddington Bear?” and completed English language tests. The second round (in-person) was attended by 37 students who gave correct answers to most questions and scored more than 40 points out of 70 possible.
In the second round of the competition, which was held at the gymnasium, the contestants were asked to take a listening comprehension test, describe a picture from the Paddington cartoon and tell a situation of everyday life. As a result, the jury unanimously chose Maria Gonda, a 7B grade student (English teacher Ovcharova N.A.) as the winner. Second place went to Sofia Fedoseeva (6A grade, gymnasium) and Alina Redko (7th grade, FIML). The third place was won by students of the First City Gymnasium Boychenko Sofia (7th grade, FIML), Sheludko Julia (7th grade, gymnasium) and Usenko Oleksandra (7th grade, FIML). All the winners and participants of the second round of the competition were awarded diplomas, and the winners also received authentic prizes (soft toys) from Paddington (UK). The soft toys were donated by Vic Jacopson, former president of Hope Now International Christian Charity Foundation and a longtime friend of our gymnasium.
