These days Ukraine is rejoicing at the success of Muzychuk Maria from Lviv, who has become a chess champion of the world. And it was in the days of the triumph of Maria that a Reginal Chess Championship for youth under 14 years was held in Cherkasy. It was organized by the Department of Family, Youth and Sports Affairs of Cherkasy Oblast State Administration and the Regional Chess Federation.
Our gymnasia 8th former OLEKSIY TKACHENKO won the championship and was the first at the tournament.
We congratulate Oleksiy on the championship! We wish him to rise to the heights of the current world champion Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, who is a model for Oleksiy in this intellectual kind of sport.
On March 12, 2015 final-year pupils from schools of Cherkasy and Cherkasy region took the international FCE test at the gymnasia. 20 school-leavers out of 28 representend the FCG, and they achieved the following results: C1 level - 2 pupils (Kovalenko Amelia and Yulia Hanenko); level B2 - 15 pupils, level B1 - 3 pupils.
Consequently, the quality index is 85%. Congratulations to the school-leavers who received international certificates of B2 and C1 levels and who will receive 12 points at their final examination in English according to the principal’s order without taking this state exam.
An extraordinary event occurred on March 22 in the gymnasia. Namely, a meeting of the gymnasia pupils with John Connell, an American saxophonist, and Mykola Fedorovych Yevpak, a Ukrainian saxophonist, was held. The event was organized by Vic Jackopson, a former president of Hope Now International Charitable Christian Fund (UK) and our old friend. By the way, Victor, the son of Mykola Fedorovych, studied at our gymnasia, from which he graduated with a gold medal in 2002. It was very pleasant for the teachers as well as the gymnasia administration to meet with Victor, who has achieved a lot in life and has been running his own international company.
John Connell resides in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, the birthplace of jazz. He has had a love for music and improvisation since his childhood. John brought a film about his hometown and accompanied it playing the saxophone. And when the two musicians were improvising, the pupils listened to them as enchanted. It was incredible. The sounds of the saxophone awakened to a better life and invited to travels and discoveries. English and the saxophone created musical pictures and showed a different life. The applause wasn’t stopping, and the words of gratitude pleased the musicians. The teachers and pupils will remember this unusual meeting with the two talented musicians for long and the wonderful saxophones melody will long resonate in their hearts. We express our sincere gratitude to the Vic Jackopson for organizing such a wonderful meeting.
Karl-Heinz Duerr from Stuttgart, which is in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, will be in Cherkasy on Wednesday. He has hosted short-term visiting teachers and pupils in Germany and France for several years. There is even a special section devoted to this project on our site, because our gymnasia and its principal were the co-organizers of the seminars. Almost 10 teachers and the same number of pupils participated in Karl-Heinz Duerr’s memorable projects. Our website as well as the regional and Ukraine’s press wrote about that.
On Wednesday, Karl-Heinz Duerr wants to meet with leaders of non-governmental organizations of the regional center, working on the issues of European integration of Ukraine. His visit may enliven the attractive and extremely interesting project.
The German visitor is going to visit Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk.
On March 12, 2015 the International Cambridge ESOL Examinations (FCE) was held according to the agreement signed between the gymnasia and the Oxford Class School of English (Kyiv). All in all, 28 final-year pupils of the city secondary schools were tested, among them there were 20 gymnasia ones. There were also final-year pupils from Gymnasia No. 9, FML, Schools No. 28, No. 34, Zolotonosha gymnasia.
The pupils took a computer-based examination on such skills as listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Now, they have an opportunity to receive international certificates of B1 and B2 levels.

Subjects discussed: HIV/AIDS, human trafficking, peace-building, leadership, project design and management and creativity. Practice CACTUS is non-political, non-religious, non-governmental event. It is part of the CACTUS (Community ACTion Ukrainian Style) program –10-day summer leadership forum - aimed at promoting civil society andteaching youth how to become leaders in their own community. The program is organized by active Ukrainians and Peace Corps volunteers.Funding of the program is fully dependent on grants and community contributions.
In November of this year it is planned to hold celebrations on the occasion of the 135th anniversary of the gymnasia. Currently, we are scheduling the celebration. Considering the realities of the present time, we do not plan great celebrations, however, the anniversary we will try to celebrate worthy.
A special section for the anniversary has been created on the website.We’d like to ask the gymnasia pupils, their parents, teachers, and especially former school-leavers to familiarize themselves with its contents. We would like to receive from the school-leavers their memories, pictures, and possibly some help for the holiday.
On March 6, the Interact gathered to elect a new club president.<0Two candidature were proposed for voting by secret ballot. The Interact member Alexandrova Dasha, who told votes with the watchful candidates keeping an eye on the process, announced the name of the next President - ANTON YAKOVENKO from 10B Form.
Anton is well known at gymnasia and the city for his creative achievements. These days his work is showed off for voting in the contest of videos on the subject “I'm Proud of Being a Student of My School”.
Oleksandr Shvets, a 10B Form pupil, has presented recently the gymnasia ABC book mini-museum with another exhibit. This time the exhibit is from Hungary.
Let us remind you that the ABC book museum has been located on the ground floor of the gymnasia since 2012.
As soon as March 10, the exhibit will take its place at the exhibition.
NOTE. The gymnasia administration will be grateful everybody for new exhibits brought from the CIS and other foreign countries. We are also ready to buy the exhibits.
Metametrics and the British Council (London) carry out a global study of reading ability in English (known as Aptis Resarch). For this purpose a short test is conducted for young people aged 16 in the on-line mode. General requirements: there must be at least 30 participants; the testing time is 70 minutes. It's nice that the testing is free.
5. On March 5, 2015 41 pupils from Cherkasy First city gymnasia, participated in “English Study Reading 2015” at the invitation of the British Council (London) and with the support of S. Beltyukova, Ph.D., Professor of the University of Toledo (Ohio, USA), who acted as the guarantor of the gymnasia pupils’ high training quality. The test tasks were varied: multiple choice, making a story by combining separate sentences, the selection of titles to texts, and so on. All the 10th and 11th formers who took the test, concluded that the test was interesting, but its vocabulary was a bit complicated. That is why, let us begin to study harder. And we, the teachers, are looking forward to the results.
IV International Congress of Leaders of Education, attended by 42 representatives from almost all over Ukraine, worked in Poland (Warsaw, Lodz) on February 23-27. The Congress schedule included familiarity with education in Poland and the Czech Republic and the presentation of such topics as "Advertising of secondary education in the XXI century"; "Presentation of the International educational program "Eurostudent"; "Modern technologies in higher education".
In the framework of the Congress the participants were familiarised with the educational opportunities of young people from Eastern Europe at Polish and Czech universities and secondary educational institutions.<0Cherkasy Oblast teachers were represented by our principal and the principal of school No. 28. They can provide advice to parents and pupils on the issues of the Polish education system. Soon there will be an all-gymnasia parent meeting at which the principal is going to inform the audience about the possibility of their children.
On February 28, Cherkasy specialized school No. 28 named after T. G. Shevchenko held the first forum of the UNO Model in Cherkasy: "A Step Toward Diplomacy." The subject of the model was "International cooperation as a key to sustainable development, peace and security of the international community". About 10 schools of our city, including HLL, Schools No. 32, No. 11, and others participated in building the model. The schedule was rich and interesting. Oleksandr Shvets, a gymnasia Form 10 B pupil, a delegate from our gymnasia, was awarded a diploma as the best speaker. Despite the fact that our pupils represented the Russian Federation, which is now very unpopular, they competed well and were one of the best.
The gymnasia pupil VOLOSCHENKO Christian, together with his instructor Anatoliy Illyashenko, won the third place in the competition of videopoetry, which took place within the framework of the festival “The Black Horseshoe” devoted to Vasyl Symonenko’s 80th birth anniversary.
The contest was summed up in the "Kobzar" Museumin the city of Cherkasy on February 8.
All in all, the jury was presented 19 short videos based on the poetry or prose, the author of which is our distinguished countryman.
Participants from different parts of Ukraine: Dnipropetrovsk, Pereyaslav - Khmelnytsky, Sumy, Kirovohrad and, of course, Cherkasy embodied their own vision of the writer’s creative genius of the era of the sixties.In the course of time the creative work of Vasyl Symonenko is growing more and more in importance and relevance.
All the participants presented their works under pseudonyms. Our work (it can be viewed HERE) participated in the competition under the pseudonym of ARTIST and made everybody admire the craftsmanship of the videopoetry production.
Disciples of the Folk arts and dance group "Victoria" and the Studio of modern dance "RIO DANCE" of Cherkasy city multidisciplinary youth center has successfully participated in the Championship of Ukraine and all-Ukrainian competition of modern dance sports that are qualifying for the World Championship of 2015 (Rimini, Italy). There are also a few girls from our gymnasia among the champions. Yaremchuk Daria, Dubinchuk Evheniy, Sukhenko Victoria, Kuzmenko Anna, Slipchenko Victoria became the Champions of Ukraine. Among the prize winners were Matkowska Victoria, Serhienko Tymofiy, Lytvyak Oleksandra (instructor Sukhenko Victoria) and Scoriak Kira, Romashyna Olha, Haiko Eva-Maria, Ratsiuk Anastasia (instructor Galkina Violetta). We would like to congratulate on the victory and to wish you success at the World Championship of 2015!

Les etudes ici sont different d'Ukraine, ils font beaucoup d'analyses de textes,on a les matieres comme :Le Francais (on lit,analyse des livres, des poemes et la grammaire) les Maths,la Physique-Chimie,la Sciene Vie de Terre (Biologie) l'Espagnol,l'Anglais,l'Histoire-Geograpie,le Sport,le Droit. En plus je suis passé dans une classe avec 6 heures d'art.
More than two months, the Form 10 B pupil CAPLICAS Algerdas will spend in Lornas, Cyprus where he will participate in a training camp before the triathlon European Championship.
Algerdas has been doing this sport long and successfully, and he has remarkable achievements. The city and Ukrainian sports media city, as well as our newspaper HYMNAZYST have written about his successes more than once. He was also the winner of the Gymnasia’s competition GYMNASIA’S PUPIL of the YEAR in the category OLYMPIC RESERVE.
On February 6, the gymnasia phase of a declamatory skill contest was held in the FCG assembly hall. 10 senior gymnasia pupils tried themselves as successors of Cicero, and it is worth noting that the attempt was quite successful.
The participants were welcomed by the principal and a vice-principal; the jury composed of Sayenko S. I. Kirsanova E. V., Ananyeva N. V., Potiomkina O. V. and Tkachenko L. D. listened carefully to all the participants’ performances. Some contest works impressed the jury members very much with the quality and depth of knowledge of English.
The contest results will be announced next week. The contest winner will represent the gymnasia at the competition that will be held at the FCG in March.
The traditions to help those who defend our country on the military fronts are alive today. In the gymnasia archives we have found a telegram, which was signed in 1945 by J. Stalin, and it goes there about the gratitude to pupils and teachers of Cherkasy secondary school No. 1 (now known as our gymnasia) for 13 500 rubles raised for the construction of aircraft.
Many years later, we again take up a subscription, this time for the ATO soldiers, among which there are a lot of parents of our pupils. Now we are collecting food and taking up a subscription that volunteers will hand in to our heroes. The subscription is being taken up by Vynogradova S. O., a vice principal.<0Now, more than a third of our teachers have donated money to be handed in our soldiers. The class teachers are actively accumulating the funds.
A traditional meeting with our school leavers was conducted on January 31. Our former pupils were welcomed by Ananyeva N. V., a vice-principal, the gymnasia pupils presented them with a small concert. Those present had an opportunity to meet with their teachers, to walk the classrooms and corridors.
Unfortunately, in recent years, less and less school leavers are coming to the meeting. Time for student vacations differs from university to university in Ukraine and abroad.Thus, all the school leavers studying at universities abroad visited the gymnasia in January. Ukrainian universities have also reduced vacation time because of the policy of economy of energy supply...
At the next pedagogical meeting and the FCG board implementation of a new format of the once extremely popular meetings will be discussed. We look forward to your suggestions.
Another edition of the printed matter saw the light of the day. The editorial board, on conducting a precanvas, decided to return the original newspaper name called GYMNASYST.
1200 copies of the newspaper were printed, and it is expected that 200 copies will be handed over to the East of Ukraine. The newspaper contains several pages with regards to the ATO soldiers.
The newspaper contains a lot of interesting materials, a third of them is in English.
All the gymnasia pupils will receive (from their class teachers) a copy of the paper, it is also possible to order and receive it by post.
